Highly Sensitive People: Am I Being Too “Sensitive” About This Pet Peeve?

I read something recently about men posing with dogs on dating online sites. It turns out that they didn’t actually own these dogs! They were trying to attract women through the false pretense that they were dog owners.

I’ve been out of the dating scene for over forty years. Am I being too “sensitive” to believe that this is reprehensible behavior? I definitely have a pet peeve about this!

I realize that this is a little thing to be bothered about compared to the rest of the problems of the world, but this is troubling to me. Don’t these people realize that they’ll be caught in this lie? Is this a good way to start an honest relationship?

I guess I’m old-fashioned about how people should act. Have we lost our moral compass in the internet age? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.

I am soooo jealous that you have been out for 40 years. I was out for 30, and just starting again now (as an HSP no less).

I think the dog thing is a little like click bait. It grabs your attention, but will be reveled immediately. It’s similar to photos of yourself with a car at a car show, or wearing makeup, or photoshoping your photo, or including photos from 20 years ago.

Lots of things people do to get noticed. The only one that really bothers me is posting photos from 20 years ago, but different genders have different sensitivities.

The important thing is to accept your emotion as valid, experience it, and move forward without dehumanizing anyone.

    Hi Lorne,

It’s a much different world now than when I was single! You’re right about accepting emotions and moving forward.

I’ll try to remember this the next time I get mad at others. LOL

I completely agree with your viewpoint Cliff , I think it is a kind of manipulation these men are practicing by showing photographs of themselves that imply they are dog owners. In doing this they are advertising the fact that the they are caring .animal lovers who have the time and ability to properly look after an animal , to put someone else’s a ( their pets ) needs as equal to their own etc etc ..essentially that they are a caring more sensitive ,& settled kind of a guy . As a woman myself I believe many women will be more bowled over by a guy with a cute dog than one standing stroking a flashy car. Basically …it’s dishonest !!

      Hi Andrea,

It really bothered me when I first saw this article about deception. I hate false “advertising”!

Good for you for seeing what this really is. It’s good to know that many women love highly sensitive animal lovers.

DO YOU HEAR THAT SINGLE HIGHLY SENSITIVE ANIMAL LOVERS? Here’s your chance to find nice single ladies who share your interests! LOL
