I mentioned in a previous post about my childhood feelings about school and a difficult grammar school teacher that embarrassed me. This had a profound negative influence on me. This is an example of “personal baggage” that we all have to carry around.
There comes a point in everyone’s life when we have to let go of this burden or keep carrying it around. What good does it do to keep alive a bad experience or harbor resentment against someone who has wronged us?
Perhaps it’s too comfortable to let go of an “old friend” that’s been an important part of our lives. Maybe we are “addicted” to the pain and suffering that an experience or person has caused us.
If we are truly committed to improving our lot in life, awareness of why we act as we do and forgiveness of things from our negative past will help us move forward. It’s extremely important that we forgive ourselves for not being “perfect”.
It is too easy to revert back to our negative programing that we have carried around for years. Seek help if you need it. Make a conscious decision to utilize your best talents and move in a positive direction.
It will do wonders for your self-esteem. You’ll be able to take risks that will move you closer to what you want.
A good example of me taking a personal risk was when I wrote my book, Making Sense of Your High Sensitivity. I was afraid to write about my life in a public forum because of my concern about what others would think of me. I was also riddled with the burden of trying to make the book “too perfect”.
I have learned that when you have a burning desire to do something, you go for what you want. My desire to motivate and help highly sensitive people overcame my fears of what the consequences would bring.
