What is the primary purpose of the Essential Sound Series (ESS)?
These recordings use psychoacoustic techniques that naturally trigger the relaxation or arousal response. Therefore, when considering how to use these recordings, ask yourself about the level of relaxation or stimulation of the nervous system that best serves the situation. Don’t be afraid to experiment with the music; it cannot hurt you. If you find that you become agitated while listening, simply turn the music off or switch to a slower or faster CD. Your body will tell you what it needs… ESS is simply a tool to speed up or slow down the nervous system using the most beautiful music in the world!

How long shall I listen?
With compromised immune or nervous systems, sometimes less is more. Think of these compositions as a box of fine chocolates. One or two pieces may be just enough. Experiment and see what works, remembering that we are different every day and therefore the impact of music will be different as well. Most of us are accustomed to putting on a CD and listening to the full disk. This, however, may not be the best listening for you. Try a few minutes at different times of the day. Be your own sound healer and experiment with ESS. You will come to find it a gentle, lovely way to be with sound in the course of your day‘s activities.

Adjust volume based on the level of excitability you desire. If you listen with headphones, keep the volume soft. You will still derive the full effect without hurting your auditory system. If you want to get up and dance, turn up the volume on the stereo and have some fun. Movement and sound combined provide 80% of optimum cortical charge. Sound by itself provides 30%.

Is special listening equipment required?
Essential Sound has been designed to deliver full benefit as easily as possible. These CDs can be listened to through an ordinary playback system. Headphones are not required; however, they may enhance your listening experience.*

(*The 2 albums of Sound Asleep contain binaural beat frequencies. In this instance, headphones will deliver an optimal effect. Given that these albums are designed for people laying down to rest, it may be more convenient to position a speaker a few feet from each side of the head. Also, the sound can be played from any regular stereo system and still have a powerful effect.)

How much music is enough?
It is different for everyone. With ESS, consider each composition an infusion of potent sonic frequency. Based on many variables — the condition of the listener, time of day, etc. — one or two compositions at specific tempos may be all the sensory input necessary to stimulate the appropriate relaxation or arousal response.

The CD sets are numbered 1-4. Sound Asleep (#1) is the slowest and simplest. To the opposite end of the spectrum, Energy (#4) is the fastest and most complex. Experiment and see what feels the best to you.

Are there any contra-indications to be aware of?
The albums of Calm, Uplifting, and Energy consist entirely of re-arranged classical music played by acoustic instruments. Other than the entraining effects of tempo, there should be no contra-indications. However, if you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare professional.
