Does technology stress you out?

Does technology stress you out? More news has been coming out about the various effects of technology on our world. For some, it’s had an amazing contribution to their lives. For others, it’s detracting from their real life interactions with others.

But a new Gallup poll is showing that those who feel that technology is causing them more stress still feel they have better lives! So stress may not be synonymous with life satisfaction for everyone.

Mobile technology is the root of this particular Gallup poll. It’s different from technology like a PC where you’re unable to access it while driving or participating in some sort of outdoor family activity.

Email is one of the tops stress factors for mobile technology workers. Email is always seeping into your life – so it doesn’t operate on a 9-5 basis. You’re checking it before bed, while on vacation, etc. Can any of you relate to this?

People who utilize mobile technology for work report working an average of seven more hours per week than someone whose job isn’t dependent on it. This extra time spent working and less relaxation time can also increase stress.

It didn’t matter what age, gender or ethnicity you were – in the March and April 2014 Gallup poll, all signs pointed to the fact that mobile technology is a factor in how much stress you carry with you throughout your day.

The odd thing was, these same high-stressed, overworked individuals who use mobile technology were the same ones who gave their lives a higher overall rating for satisfaction. They consider themselves thriving in life.

You may not really have a choice as to whether or not you use mobile technology. Many employers require you to be accessible at all hours of the day – at east via email.

The best thing you can do if you’re chained to mobile technology and still want to thrive in life is to learn how to handle your stress on your own – and do try to set rules of technology for yourself so that you’re still enjoying professional success, but not at the expense of personal life satisfaction.

Does technology stress you out? Do you feel that it helps or hinders your social life? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.

  1. It certainly has that potential. Too much of anything is unhealthy. I feel for office workers who spend their whole work day at the computer. Ironically these same folks are often seen on their smart phones when away from their desk or commuting.

I take frequent breaks, and turn off the phone during my free time so I don’t lose touch with my environment and surroundings. Many folks have become like zombies, constantly glued to their smart phone screens everywhere they go!
