What’s the matter with being different?

What’s the matter with being different? Why do people sometimes feel the need to be “normal” and fit in with society?

I felt different when I was a child.  I was self-conscious about my appearance and didn’t feel like I fit in with others. Since I was tall for my age, children frequently teased me about this. I wasn’t popular and I had a few friends.

As I get older and hopefully wiser, I don’t have that need to fit in. I’m happy being myself and don’t try to be something that I’m not. That’s the message that I want to impart upon my readers.

I get a lot of email asking me if this or that is a highly sensitive exclusive characteristic. Sure, we highly sensitive people take in everything more emotionally and physically than others, but we’re not unlike others that have their insecurities.

When you really think about, we’re all different! What would this world be like if we were all the same? Boring and unproductive! It takes “different people” to come up with interesting, unique, and innovative ways of living and doing things.

Why not celebrate your uniqueness, rather than be self-conscious and berate and hide your differences? Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Your true friends will accept you the way you are.

  1. Insecurity about this unique sensitivity has always left me feeling so out of place from everyone else. I used to ask myself why I was so emotional, scatter-brained, and observational when I felt that I needed to be more decisive and assertive. I guess I still ask myself this. I have a close friend that I recently discussed this with and, thankfully enough, understands completely and sees something in me that I never have been able to notice. A good support system like this is allowing me to slowly develop and appreciate my intuitive and creative gifts. I can’t wait to go out and volunteer my time so that I may help someone in any way that I can. Becoming a psychiatrist has occurred to me many times. I’m a work in progress, but reading some of your posts on this site has really shown me that I’m not alone, and knowing that is truly one of the best feelings. I know this comment was a bit longer than you expected, and I honestly feel as if I could type on and on, but I want to extend a huge thanks to you and this site. It has done wonders for my self-esteem by providing the inspiration I need for true inner fulfillment.
